One of the best things about the Film Society’s programming–besides the price–is the quality of the presenters on both the filmmaking and festival programming sides. Tonight’s “Thinking Outside the Doc Box” panel at Mezzanine will include discussion about whether character-driven documentaries are the only fund-worthy kind (Richard Saiz, senior programming manager at the Independent Television Service, says they aren’t). Institutional funding sources and alternative documentary structuring are fair game before “Laptop Shop,” the regular peer review series that invites local filmmakers to share their work in progress.

Alley PB added these pithy words on Feb 09 10 at 5:53 pmI watched the program via ITVS’ live streaming. I thought the information that they provided was really great, and even though SFFS programming is usually fairly strong, this was the best program I’ve participated in. The program was dense with insights into both new directions to explore as a documentary filmmaker, as well as what SFFS and ITVS are looking for when they are deciding which projects to support. It was incredibly inspiring, and I went straight from the live stream to scripting some ideas.
Alley PB added these pithy words on Feb 09 10 at 6:36 pmA couple of other things… New Doc Editing and ITVS will be providing access to last night’s recording and some supplementary materials online. I’m not sure when or where, so if you’re interested you should contact them. A couple of their best tips were to become clear on your unique relationship to your material and learn how to communicate it. And don’t shy away from letting the emotional connection show in your grant proposals. Also, Michele Turnure-Salleo from SFFS said that distribution plans are a key element to your proposal and should be at least 1-2 pages long. They should incorporate a multitude of ideas from broadcast distribution to touring the film festival circuit to online distribution plans. Think it out and have several distribution options in mind when you apply to SFFS (or any of the others) for support. There was a lot more, so I would really encourage anyone interested to find the online resources that accompany the event: outreach@itvs.org.
