“Who Does She Think She Is?” to Screen on Sunday

Filmmaker Tiffany Schlain turned me onto the documentary “Who Does She Think She Is?” to screen at theaters in 50 cities nationwide on Saturday night Sunday. I’ll leave the project description (below) to the filmmakers, but my reasons for excitement are two-fold: the film chronicles female artists and mothers working against ideological and economic odds for the sake of their work, and interested individuals can host their own in-home screenings.

In a half-changed world, women often feel they need to choose: mothering or working? Your children’s well-being or your own own? “Who Does She Think She Is?”, a documentary by Academy Award winning filmmaker Pamela Tanner Boll, features five fierce women who refuse to choose. Through their lives, we explore some of the most problematic intersections of our time: mothering and creativity, partnering and independence, economics and art. The film invites us to consider both ancient legacies of women worshipped as cultural muses and more modern times where most people can’t even name a handful of female artists.

Dia de los Muertos SF

Two of the best costumes I saw while handing out candy in Cole Valley with pals on Saturday were women wearing bright dresses, flowers and white faces, and it got me most excited for Dia de los Muertos today. (Consider it the best Halloween hangover cure–not to mention a good excuse to consider our existence and mortality.)Screen shot 2009-11-02 at 11.08.56 AM

The Meso-American holiday will be celebrated with performances and a walking procession starting at 24th and Bryant at 7 tonight. A large-scale altar installation created by the Marigold Project will also be celebrated at Garfield Park until the late hours.
