San Franciscans are fond of saying that September and October are the best time of year (yes, the temptation of an Indian Summer), but I’m most excited for these months as they lead up to the official opening of the Tenderloin-based Gray Area Foundation for the Arts on 10/1. After all, how many organizations can claim to have a Recombinant Media Labs director, be opening residential space for local digital artists, and have replaced a liquor store and porn theater?
Josette Melchor and her team’s efforts to offer youth educational opportunities and art creation and showcase space are no small feat. We spoke with Melchor as part of the Women 2.0 In Conversation series earlier this year while the Taylor St. space was still being developed, and I’m encouarged by her vision (officially described as “by making digital culture accessible, substantive and inspiring, we aim to help realize the greatest power of technology: to bring us closer, faster”).
